Digipaks are a type of packaging made out of card stock or other heavy paper/cardboard material and can be used for CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays.
Digipaks typically open like a book; however, there are other
stylessuch as the 3-part digipak: one portion opens to the right, one to
the left, and one or more plastic trays holding a disc inside.
Usually, the portion of the digipak that holds the CD/DVD/Blu-ray Disc is made of plastic like a traditional jewel case – the plastic part is attached to the paper backgroundand has special ‘teeth’ or a hub to secure the disc in place.

History
Digipaks were first created by MeadWestvaco, and their product, called Digi-Pak, is trademarked. However, as the format became more popular and began to be used by more manufacturers, the generic “digipak” came to be used to describe all soft disc packaging.

Digipak Advantages
- They look professional and many musicians, photographers, designers and others like to use them for aesthetic reasons.
- The digipak panels or sleevesallow for more design options because there is more surface area to cover.
- Digipaks don’t crack like jewel cases do, but they can rip and eventually the paper may peel and separate. So a UV coating is recommended to preserve the outer portion of the package, ensuring greater longevity.
- Digipaks can be more environmentally friendly than jewel cases because they can be made of recycled paper or sustainable materials. For example, thisrecycled digipak tray was made from sugarcane.
